VHF Radio Short Range Certificate
(GMDSS)
The course consists of
7 hours classroom learning with the candidate doing at least 3 hours home
study prior to
the course using the approved pack provided, which is sent by post. The
classroom training runs from 0830 to
1630. Examinations
commence when the course has finished so expect to stay behind to complete
your
examination.
It is essential that
the home study is completed so that the candidate is ready for the
classroom session and final
Examinations. A short test will be held at the commencement of the course.
You will need to
provide a current Colour Passport Photograph and be familiar wi1h the
phonetic alphabet,
Course
topics include:
the basics of radio
operation
the correct
frequencies (channels) to be used
distress, emergency
and medical assistance procedures
making ship to shore telephone calls
Digital Selective
Calling (DSC) using simulators
Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
Search and Rescue (SART)
At the end of the
course the Theory and Practical Examination will be conducted by a visiting Examiner. To
successfully pass the Examination you will need to complete a short
written I multiple choice assessment and a
practical assessment using a VHFlDSC Radio.
The cost of the course
is £140 plus £60 for the Examination paid to the RYA online.
